Wings Across the Atlantic – Mark Avery

This is my latest book: Wings Across the Atlantic: a year in the life of two old birders.
About Wings Across the Atlantic
It is essentially a re-run of the book, Birds of a Feather by Colin Rees and Derek Thomas (see my review – click here) 11 years later with Colin based in Maryland, USA, and me taking the role of the UK-based co-author. Derek Thomas, Colin’s previous co-author passed away last year (click here) and the book is dedicated to him. The cover is by Chris Packham and there are attractive line drawings of birds by Ian Rees through the book. Any profits from the book will be shared by the American Bird Conservancy and Wild Justice – but there won’t be any profits unless we sell several hundred copies!
We are two old birders: Colin is wise, cultured and based on Chesapeake Bay but travels to other US top birding locations. I, as readers of this blog will know, am opinionated, grumpy and rather hefted to one of the most bird-less counties of the UK. We are old enough to have seen and thought about changes in bird life around us over many decades, and we both look and listen for birds every day even when there are no binoculars round our necks.
We write about the birds and other wildlife we see through the changing seasons and the environmental news and events that occur. There was a UK general election and a US presidential election during the year in question, and real life (family, chores, meetings, and in my case Wild Justice) intervenes.
When cross-examined by a journalist who asked, ‘Why should anyone buy this book?‘, I said, “Good question! It’s a pleasant read, neatly positioned somewhere between War and Peace and Bridget Jones’s Diary with less war than one and less sex than either, but a lot more birds.“.
