The 2025 Charles Labatiuk Youth for Nature Award: Ella Yan
Ella Yan, Winner of the 2025 Charles Labatiuk Youth for Nature Award
Currently a grade 12 student at Moscrop Secondary School in Burnaby, BC, Ella has also been an executive of the Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network, where she’s helped lead over 20 climate justice workshops for students. Through this work, Ella has inspired the next generation to adopt sustainable practices and become active environmental advocates.

Beyond her leadership with the network, Ella has participated in the Ocean Wise “Mountains to Oceans” program, where she was able to contribute to marine conservation efforts and local shoreline cleanups, protecting wildlife habitats while building connections with other passionate young leaders. “One of the most inspiring moments for me, “ she says, “was seeing young children participating at clean ups — proof that awareness can spark lifelong environmental stewardship.”
Ella is currently launching a new organization called Sustainable Youths, which focuses on empowering young people to lead sustainability projects, advocate for environmental policy, and create equitable access to eco-education. “What drives me most,” she says, “is seeing youth discover their own ability to make change — turning small acts into movements that protect our planet.”
Ella’s commitment extends beyond organized events and campaigns — she actively integrates sustainable practices into her daily life. From mindful consumption to waste reduction, she leads by example, modeling the small but meaningful changes that, when practiced collectively, create lasting environmental impact. Through her leadership, initiative, and personal dedication, Ella exemplifies how young people can play a vital role in advancing conservation and inspiring community action
“Winning the Charles Labatiuk Youth for Nature Award is both an honour and a motivation,” she says. “Personally, it reminds me that even small actions can create ripples of change when we work together for a shared cause.”
Ella is grateful to the Burnaby Youth Sustainability Network, Ocean Wise, and Opportunities for Students as well as the Burnaby District School Board. She especially wants to thank her family “who have always supported me and helped me with each of my initiatives.”
