offf – Kukūbala / Cannot Be Reached: Rituals in Sound and Silence – Frequency State

Two new pieces from offf introduce the project’s debut album Ritual, a conceptually rich ambient work constructed entirely from a single field recording — the church bell of the Assumption, captured in the artist’s grandmother’s garden in Merkinė, Lithuania. Every sound, drone, and tone in the album originates from that single recording, reshaped into layers that range from serene to unsettling.
Kukūbala
Kukūbala opens with bell-like resonances that expand and merge into an evolving ambient soundscape. The track swells gently, its texture both sacred and hypnotic. The title references Lithuanian folklore — “Kukūbala” meaning “the devil’s pond” — and that tension between ritual purity and darker undercurrents gives the piece its emotional weight.
Cannot Be Reached
In contrast, Cannot Be Reached strips away the overt bell tones to explore darker, more textural territory. The sound evokes a disconnected signal or unreachable call — a ritual in communication itself. Low drones and distant hums create a brooding atmosphere, suggesting both isolation and reverence.
Both tracks reflect the overarching concept of Ritual: to explore memory, divinity, and chance through the transformation of a single sound source. Inspired by Jodorowsky’s idea that “God lies in chance,” offf removes ego and identity from the process, letting the sound dictate the form. The result feels meditative yet raw — a sonic study of transformation and the sacred hidden in repetition.
